At Cami’s new school she doesn’t really have homework. The most that she’s been sent home with is “research” on her family tree (names of grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.). Sometimes she picks out a fun book at school and we read it, which really lifts the pressure off and allows for free play post school.

In the spring of this last year, when Cami started writing and reading she also started journaling. Unfortunately, She misplaced her journal in June and stopped taking the time to think about her day and write something. I encouraged her several times to journal, but she was so specific that she needed *that* journal.

So I decided to enter a new dimension to her journaling… the art behind the words.
I bought her a watercolor color notebook at the art shop and every couple days suggest that she paint in it or write something in it.

What’s really nice is all that art and six year old thoughts are in one book that we will store in her memory box when she has finished. Boy I am loving it!
Cami does too, she loves drawing, painting and writing so you really can’t go wrong…

…except maybe when little brother comes in and breaks concentration.

Can I just say how happy I am to hear that she doesn’t have homework!!! That’s great news! And great that you recognize how important it is for her to have that time for free play and drawing and painting and writing and all that amazing stuff! Yay!!!

I am also glad to hear that she has no homework. She is too young for homework and should come home and play and hang out. My daughter never had homework except for weekly spelling words (from class 2) and special projects such as a house building project in class 3. I never consider reading (for pleasure) as homework because it is just part of life. Love the idea of an art journal, I got two small sketch pads for both of us so we can walk around the city and parks and draw whatever takes our fancy. My daughter loves writing and journals and is always wanting just one more journal even when her other ones still have blank pages.

I love this, Erin. Gigi has an Art Book (I mainly did that to curb loose papers, although it didn’t exactly fix that problem) but I love the idea of giving her a “journal” that she can use regularly. I think it’d be a fun thing to work into our daily rhythm.

ha! look a Noah’s mischievous expression! That picture Cami drew of the heart family is just too much. Look how big daddy’s heart/body is!
My girls have had their own sketch books since they were tiny, and we looove going through them. they totally went through phases of drawing the same thing a million times over.I like the idea of a watercolor notebook. Something different that might get excited about.
