Cami has started color word recognition at school. Everyday when she comes home we get out her homework (that’s right kindergardener’s have homework!) and start to sing a song that starts like this “Mary wore a red dress, red dress, red dress…”. Anyways, she’s really starting to recognized the cards and the name of the words on those cards. I thought something fun for her to do would be able to play with the letters and what she’s learning. Certainly we could have gotten little letters, but creating them together was just so fun. Here’s what we used:
Watercolor paper (of course)
A circle cutter (1 3/8″)
Circle magnets
Modge Podge

Cami cut out 26 circles. This was a great counting activity for her. It was a bit frustrating because Noah would smile standing by her singing or saying “whacha doin’ Cami” right in the middle of her counting and then she’d have to start all over. She wasn’t pleased about it at all and eventually I made Noah leave the room while Chris smirked and muttered “two hundred, fifty four, twenty seven, five… ” under his breath. Oh those guys!

I wrote the alphabet, one letter on each circle and then gave it to Cami.
Cami modge podged the circle and affixed the magnet onto the center of the back of the watercolor circle.
We set them on a rack (with the magnet side up) to dry, to prevent the paper from sticking to anything.

After about an hour the magnet letters were dry and we put them on the fridge.

It turned out perfect for word creation and recognition!
Updated::
Since creating these Noah has peeled several letters off the magnets. If your kiddos are careful, you will have no problem keeping these on. If not, one of the commenters below linked what she did with her watercolor magnets. Click here and you can read how to make them last longer.

What a great idea….I wish I had had parenting ideas like this at my fingertips when my own kids were little.
these are so cool erin! i would totally make some, i think it would be the perfect project for me and b-1 unfortunately b-2 would totally eat those magnets…
i think he’ll be growing out of that soon, but not quite yet.
i love your lettering!
Such a darling, simple idea.
I love this project! Why have I never thought of this! So much more attractive than the plastic letters, plus fun to create!
How cute- what a great project!
that is the best idea, to make your own letter magnets! they are adorable, Cami must love them. I am wishing *I* had thought of that when my girls were learning letters. I suppose its not too late. there’s always spelling practice…
What a fantastic idea! I didn’t think these would stand up to my rough and tumble kids so I found a marble magnet tutorial and married it with your idea and came up with these: http://thousandislandsmama.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/handmade-presents-alphabet-magnets/
I used bigger magnets and flat-bottomed glass garden rocks on top. Thanks for the inspiration!
Kelli, this is a great addition to the magnets, as Noah has peeled several of them off. Thanks for commenting!
