a two year old’s birthday

by erin on August 6, 2010

Although Noah’s birthday was officially Monday, Chris had duty, so we did our family celebration on Sunday night. Last year and even this past Christmas, he was too young to really understand opening gifts so it was fun to watch him this time. His favorite part was pulling out each sheet of tissue paper saying “der doe” (there you go) every single time. For Noah’s birthday, Chris and I had grand plans of making him a Noah’s ark. I’d seen several handbuilt Noah’s arks out there ranging from $200-800. I figured we could totally do this. Well, if the Navy would give Chris more time off and making & painting pairs of animals could happen in a few minutes we may have had a chance. We set a new goal: Christmas. In the meantime, I did make pairs of animals that will go with his collection and Chris made some lovely natural wood blocksĀ (check out yesterday’s post). We got all the natural wood for free off freecycle, but for the animals I bought two pine planks from Home Depot.
Camille also wanted to make a gift for her “bubbie” so I got some great wool and she made the most beautiful, colorful wool ball. I love these balls. The kids can throw them around in the house like crazy (which they do) and nothing gets damaged. He also got some great books and rainbow from Poppy, Peeps and Poppy Bob.
We had cupcakes and he was mesmerized by the candles. I love his little unsure face right here.

Camille fell so in love with Noah’s little wooden blocks and animals that she’s been building things like crazy. She’s very patient with Noah who finds great joy in knocking them all down. I think she knows since they are “his” she should allow him some joys knocking them down. I had grand plans on making her a new dolly for her birthday, but after watching her with these, I’m rethinking what to do.

That was our fun Sunday celebration and tomorrow we will be celebrating again with a few friends.

That looks like a very sweet, very special birthday celebration. Happy Birthday to your little guy. Those tree blocks are great, and the animals are adorable. My eleven year old still plays with tree blocks, making tree houses for her dolls. They are certainly a toy that gets a lot of play.

Aww I can’t believe the little guy is 2 already!? Wasn’t he just born yesterday? :) He’s adorable. What a head of curls. It melts any mother’s heart I think. You guys are so crafty and creative! Really- making your own presents! Do you have wood tools? You should write a post about the process. I’m fascinated how you even go about doing something like that.

Celebrating some birthdays should go on for days (it’s when you’re over 40 that they should be ignored completely!).

oh I love this all so much! what a beautiful celebration. it does seem there is never enough time to finish handmade gifts doesn’t it? i can’t tell you how many times i’ve started something only to not finish it until the next holiday/birthday.
i love all the little animals you made!

Happy, happy birthday to your boy! Beautiful celebration! Your wooden creations are beautiful. I’m so impressed with them, especially because I took my junior high technology (aka “shop”) lessons to heart and am a bit afraid of power tools.
