infrared in photoshop

by erin on July 6, 2010

I’ve always loved the dream like look that comes from infrared and sometimes I miss the process that goes behind using film like this. However, photoshop is really amazing and has allowed creation of things that I couldn’t even do with film. Today’s color infrared is something I never tried in film, its pretty cool. Here is the beginning photo from our strawberry picking adventures yesterday.
First thing to do is create a duplicate layer of this photo. (Choose either layer – new layer via copy or Apple J if you have a mac).
I change the name of my duplicate copy to “infrared” just to keep track of everything.

From there select the “infrared” layer. Go to channels and select the green layer (your photo should be in RGB mode). 3After you have selected the green channel your photo should appear black & white, go to: Filter — Blur — Gaussian Blur. In the box that pops up you can choose how much blur to add. You want to still be able to distinguish the photos. For this one I had 8, but if you are doing something for the web only you can choose about 4 or 5.
After gaussian blur, go back to the layers palette.
From the drop down menu on top choose “Screen” and then adjust your opacity right beside it to about 50%.
Keeping the infrared layer selected go to the new adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette and choose channel mixer. In the box the box that pops up put in the following amounts and make sure that monochrome is checked.
RED: -50 GREEN: +200 BLUE: -50.
You are almost done. You will definitely see the “infrared” look by now. The final step is to create a duplicate layer from your background layer (Layer — New — Layer via Copy or Apple J). Drag that layer to the top of your layers palette like this, I’ve labeled it “color”: From the drop down menu in the layers palette choose “overlay” and adjust your opacity to around 50%. You are done! Here is the result, fully dreamlike. I’m not sure if this works in Elements. Also, I tried to be really detailed, but if you have any questions. Please leave a comment or email me.

Thanks for all these tips. . . one day if I ever get my new camera, they will come in handy :) I do have a question about blogspot. Have you used the sight before? I want to figure out how to make my pictures big. . . like yours and a number of others I have seen who also use blogspot. . . customize a bit more than the standard. I know it can be done, just have no idea how to do it and don’t know anyone personally with blogspot who has a layout like I would like. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Blessings to you today. . .

Anna,
Go to “draft.blogger.com” and log in there. From there go to
Template Designer — Layout — Adjust Width.
Drag the slider all the way to the right.
Now that you are in the updated layout, when you make a post you should choose XL photo and it should work. Let me know if you have any more questions.

That is cool! It looks modern-vintage. The best combination in my opinion.
