felted beads

by erin on June 7, 2010

I mentioned all our snuggle bugging yesterday, but we were also full of crafty fun. I’ve been wanting to get Cami some beads, so she could practice stringing them. I decided we’d wet felt some . I also gave a second try at making eggs, which held together way better than the first. After a couple tries, I have sort of a “technique” down in how I do this with Cami. Its very simple, easy for small hands. Take two bowls. One with really hot water and a good amount of dish soap. The second with really cold water.
Dip your very tightly wound wool roving (which you can google and find all kinds of places to order it from or go purchase it) into the hot water.
Squeeze the excess water out and then roll to shape it.
(With the egg, I squeezed gently and then smoothed my hand around it in the direction that it was wrapped so as to keep the tightness of the wool against the plastic egg that is inside.)
Dip into the cold not soapy water and squeeze again and shape. Do that for about 10-15 minutes, and just enjoy the time making suds with your little one. It really is fun!
Once you are done, set them out to dry. Here’s our beads. And our improved more shaped egg.
Also, if you’ve tried your hand at wet felting and it doesn’t seem as easy as it looks, go to this article for some tips.
