Each filter tool in photoshop has a purpose and although I’m not a big fan of all the tools, I think I’ve used almost every one for some sort of purpose. The digital darkroom is amazing! So yesterday I got the cutest shot of Noah. He was wearing these little bibs that his Aunt Beka sent him and happily walking around our room. I grabbed my camera really quickly and he said “cheese” as soon I picked it up. (This is one of the few words he says by the way.) And here’s what I got:
Cute right? Except for the random hanger, cord and breifcase. So here is what I did to make those less noticeable:
I clicked the quick mask tool (at the bottom of the toolbar) and used the paintbrush tool to fill Noah in.
I deselected the quick mask tool and it had selected the entire area other than Noah (who I had painted)
From the menu I chose Filter – Blur — Guassian Blur. This put the background completely out of focus. I then decided to put a vignette around him and here is how it turned out:
Although those items are still there, they aren’t as noticeable. Instead the main focus is that sweet little smile on my sweet little guy!

I love this blur! Makes Noah stand out and he is such a cutie. Do you also have Adobe Lightroom? You need to make a photoshop for photographers tutorial book. I’d buy it!
Way Cool! I’m going to have to try this. I need tips on how to get them to take a picture in the first place! My 16-month old is impossible! She never wants me to take her pic and I don’t have a digital SLR so my shutter speed is super slow… lol
Love it.
That after pic. is totally awesome.
Man oh man, there is so much potential in photoshop. and my husband is willing to teach me. this may be the summer i finally read the camera manual and start listening to my husband’s advice about photoshop.
Excellent fix.
I’ve got my photoshop book out…it will be used this summer.
I love how easy you make this…thanks!
Erin, I love Gaussian Blur, I use it often. I HAD to because I only have a point and shoot!
