airbrushing your photos in photoshop

by erin on March 23, 2010

Since the digital age of photography has taken off, SO much can be done to a photo to make it look amazing. Today I’m going to go through an easy way to airbrush your photos in photoshop. I’m posting step-by-step photos, so even though its easy, the post will be long. If this posting is too long for you, scroll down to the bottom and click the shorthand version.

Here is the original photograph of me and my sweet girl from this summer

Now chose Layer — Duplicate Layer (or Command J if you have a mac)
Change your duplicate layer from Normal to Overlay
This is how your photograph should look: From there go to Image — Adjustments — Invert. Your photo will look like this:
Adjust the opacity from 100% to 50 or 60%Add a layer mask: Make sure that the eye for the layers mask is clicked in your layers tab, and then use the paintbrush tool to highlight the areas that you don’t want the soft airbrushed look to cover (mouth, eyes, etc.).After that click the eye off the layers mask and you should see your end product. Flatten and save your work. If you’d like the shorthand version of this (without pictures) click here for the .pdf I’ve written.

I have been playing with PS more often recently and love it. I have a super old version (7.2 or something like that) but it works. :)
